Few can argue against Newcastle United being one of the surprise packages of the season so far. Swansea may take the title come the end of the campaign, due to their refreshing brand of football, yet the Magpies charge for European qualification should not go unnoticed. Although some believe that it will be a one-off season, even talking down the clubs credentials this term, the foundations for sustaining such performances may well be in place.
As it stands Newcastle lie in sixth place, just five points off of the ‘Holy Grail’ that is fourth spot, although both Chelsea and Arsenal have a game in hand. You’d have been hard pressed to find any Geordie during pre-season who thought their side would have been in the running for a spot at Europe’s top table with nine games to play, but that is where the club, who only returned to the top-flight in 2010, find themselves.
The form of Demba Ba has been key in establishing the clubs position in the upper echelons of the league, with the Senegalese striker’s goal-tally nothing short of remarkable. 16 strikes in 24 appearances thus far have been the difference for the Toon, who without such efforts would more than likely find themselves in a mid-table position. Although there are rumours he may leave in the summer due to a minimal buy-out clause in his contract, the club are believed to be reluctant to let their star turn leave without a fight. A new contract offer is expected to be imminent, and it would come as no surprise to see the front-man sign on the dotted line and extend his stay at the club. Although Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal are widely regarded to be interested in the prolific striker, his injury record and ‘ticking time-bomb’ of a knee could be enough to deter their interest. Ba is likely to be aware of such circumstances, and a stay in the North East, where he has become a crowd favourite, could prove to be the most attractive prospect.

As well as Ba, the Toon have a squad full of talented, consistent performers. Yohan Cabaye in particular has put in many quality performances, pulling the strings from the midfield. His set-piece technique is another weapon in Alan Pardew’s armoury, making the side a real attacking threat. Papiss Cisse completes a physically imposing strike-force, while Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor (when fit) offer a solid foundation in front of Tim Krul, who has, arguably, been one of the best goalkeepers this term. Alongside the big names the likes of Leon Best and Danny Simpson have proved themselves to be solid performers, creating strength in depth at the club.
As well as on-field actions, the club is also making advances behind the scenes. Mike Ashley may not be the most popular character on Tyneside, but his strict financial approach has created stability at the club. The deal regarding the naming rights of St James’ Park may epitomise all that is wrong with the commercial aspect of the modern game, but the legitimate income, in the face of financial fair play, is one which makes much business sense. Such transactions have seen turnover increase by almost 70% over the last year, with losses in the region of just £3 million, which compared to many Premier League clubs, puts Newcastle in a strong position. These figures may be slightly distorted by the big money fee received for Andy Carroll, yet minimal investment in a replacement (Demba Ba) has proved to be a shrewd piece of business.
As well as the improving financial situation, the guaranteed income from the 52,000 seat Sports Direct Arena presents yet another positive. With such a loyal following filling the stands each weekend, fees received from gate receipts assure steady income.
With a combination of talented players, sensible financial control and loyal support, it would be no surprise to see Newcastle make another surge next season. Although Champions League may be a little ambitious in the short term, consistent qualification for the Europa League could become a reality. The Geordie faithful deserve to see their club at the top-end of the table, and the actions being undertaken hint at bright times ahead for Newcastle United
