da bet7: Manchester United’s fortunate victory at Crystal Palace all but secured a return to the Champions League, easing the pressure on the Red Devils after three straight defeats ahead of their 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Sunday.
da bwin: The three points came as a welcome relief after three matches without a goal, a run of games that once again brought into question the performances of United’s strikers.
While Wayne Rooney has established himself as the club’s number one forward, the displays from Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao have been far from convincing, and with both struggling for form; their futures have been put into question.
With just one game of the season remaining, preparations are already well underway for next season, and having agreed a deal to bring in Dutch star Memphis Depay from PSV, there’s set to be plenty more arrivals over the coming months as Louis van Gaal looks to build a squad that can challenge for silverware during the next campaign.
And with both Van Persie and Falcao enduring troubled spells in front of goal this term, a new striker could well on United’s shopping list this summer as they set about increasing their options in attack.
One name that has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford is Edinson Cavani, and with rumours that the PSG star is ready to leave the French club; he could soon be on his way to the Premier League.
But is this really a player Manchester United should be pursuing? I’m not so sure.
For a start he’s 28 years old, and although he certainly has a good few years left at the top level, splashing out a large fee for someone nearing their thirties is unlucky to prove a good investment.
£36m is the latest figure being brandished about to secure his services, but in all honesty that money could be far better spent elsewhere on a younger player that could offer them more of a long term deal.
Having forked out £55m for him two years ago when signing him from Napoli, PSG would certainly have been expected a better return from the Uruguayan who looks on course to fall short of 20 league goals once again.
In fairness to Cavani, he has netted seven in his last four games, an impressive record at any level, but the level of opposition have to be taken into consideration, and having failed to impress on numerous occasions during his time in France there’s no guarantee who would shine in the Premier League.
United have experienced first-hand with Falcao the struggles that foreign players can have when moving to England, and despite looking like world beaters before hand, when they switch to the Premier League they can become to look quite ordinary.
United should be doing all they can to avoid another repeat of this season with the Colombian having had such a little impact during his time at Old Trafford, and spending £30m plus on Cavani is not a risk worth taking.
