Groundhog Day in the US may have predicted an early spring this year, but it seems as though it’s going to be a long few months for Leeds United.
The Whites lost 1-0 to Wigan in embarrassing fashion again on Saturday, amassing 77% possession, something that almost perfectly mirrored the result last April that saw the Whites fall out of the top two for the final time.
Unfortunately, it was the same old story at Elland Road, and we felt as if we were living in the Bill Murray classic the same weekend that Americans celebrate Groundhog Day.

The fact of the matter is that we weren’t trapped reliving the same day over and over, this was almost nine months on from the Whites’ previous loss to Wigan, and the Yorkshire club just haven’t learnt their lessons.
Last week, we wrote how the Whites could banish the demons of last term by beating Wigan at Elland Road, but those little creeping thoughts of doubt will now be louder than ever before.
Let’s be honest, Leeds were always going to lose again before the end of the season, but there may not a worse game for them to have lost in given what happened in 2018/19.
It’s the same story as last year, and there is likely to be worries amongst the players that it’s going to have the same conclusion.
In December, Phil Hay stated that the team didn’t feel confident despite having an 11-point lead over third, so imagine how they feel with just a three-point gap.
The pressure is mounting, and Saturday’s result should have been the Whites’ chance to clear a huge mental hurdle, instead, they tripped right over it, and it’s going to take a lot for them to get up and recover from here.
In other news, Leeds may actually be weaker now than they were before January.
