da brwin: Clinton Morrison has told BBC Radio 5 Live (via The Chronicle) that Allan Saint-Maximin will be a superstar in a couple of years.
What did he say?
da marjack bet: The former Crystal Palace striker was talking following Newcastle’s 3-2 win against Oxford United after extra-time in the FA Cup – a game in which Saint-Maximin scored the winner.
Who the heck is that?! Can you name all 25 of these obscure Newcastle signings…
The 40-year-old was gushing in his appraisal, saying: “I called it in commentary that he looked like the difference-maker.
“In extra-time he looked the most lively. Oxford were getting tired and their full-backs were pushing on leaving their defenders two on two with Saint-Maximin and Atsu.
“You can’t do that with a player of his ability. He is still raw, he is still off the cuff, but the goal he scored – that is what he is capable of.
“In another couple of years in the Premier League he will be a superstar. He has all the natural ability.
“That is a superb goal to win an FA Cup tie.”
Work to do
There is no doubt about it – the 22-year-old’s goal against the U’s was stunning. He glided past two or three of the League One side’s players before smashing the ball into the net from outside the box. There is not much any goalkeeper could have done about that strike.
In that specific moment of the match, you could see exactly what Morrison meant – he has the raw skills to be a danger to any defence in the world. However, we need to see plenty more displays like this in the future for him to be anywhere near close to backing up that claim. That was his 13th start of the season in all competitions, yet this is just his second goal for the club. He does have two assists as well, but that is not the output of what you would call a superstar, or even someone who is approaching that status.
Currently valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, he has the ability to impress, but with just six goals in his highest scoring league campaign to date, there is a long way to go before he fulfills Morrison’s prediction. More strikes like the one against Oxford, though, and he may just be bang on the money.
